What is love?

I talked today with a good friend, and we shared some insights about love and marriage. She's young, but has a unique point of view on life. Age is just a number after all.

Why is it so important to people to hear their partner say "I love you"? I always feel these are empty words. You love someone at a specific time, and afterwards it becomes automatic. If you don't say it to your partner, something is wrong with your relationship. Is it?

I believe actions speak louder than words. My vanilla relationships were always by "I love you" kind of way, and we all know how they ended. My BDSM relationships, however, were never with romantic words. Maybe I chose my hard-Doms wisely, who knows, but I never heard from them love poem or love confession. Why would they? Their job was not to make things pretty with flowers and butterflies. It was to keep me safe and make me happy. Happiness does not equal love. Love is how you make people feel, not what they want to hear because some Hollywood movie said so.

What is love, you ask?

Love is to call someone just to hear her voice, when you have only a few minutes before a meeting that would take all night.

Love is when you hear her say she doesn't look as good as you and tell her she is the sexiest woman in the world and you are not willing to hear these nonsense again, because she is way hotter than she believes.

Love is when you see the person behind the mask, and it doesn't make her less special.

Love is when you cannot stop thinking of a person for more than 10 years, and then when this person shows up again in your life, you are the happiest person alive.

Love is to make sure her interests are well-protected, and ask nothing in return.

Love is to know you can grow and evolve and she would be there for you every second of the process, cheering, just because... well... love.

And you don't have to be married for that. On the contrary, sometimes it's better if you're not married to each other.

"There is someone out there

who thinks about you,

Someone who wants you badly,

Somewhere.

There is someone out there

dreaming of you,

Someone who loves you so much,

Somewhere."
